Geoffrey Prewitt

Advisory Council

Geoffrey D. Prewitt currently lives and works in Cairo, Egypt, where he is the Deputy Head of the Regional Center–Cairo (RCC) of UNDP.  The Center covers 17 countries in the Middle East and North Africa as well as the occupied Palestinian territory. He has over 15 years’ experience serving UNDP and Civil Society Organizations.

Prior to moving to Cairo in 2011, Mr. Prewitt held the position of Team Leader for both the Governance Team and the Poverty Reduction Team of UNDP's Programme of Assistance to the Palestinian People (PAPP) as well as serving as the Senior Governance Advisor. His prior UNDP position was Civil Society/Governance Advisor, with posts in the New York Headquarters, in Central and Eastern Africa (based in Addis Ababa) and in Eastern Europe and the CIS (based in Bratislava). Before joining UNDP, he worked with Civil Society Organizations (CSOs) in Malawi and Hungary.  His professional experience has involved civil society development and governance related work in 30+ countries.

He has written and spoken extensively on issues of civic engagement, governance, and the political economy of the Arab world; his most recent work has focused on governance transitions in the Arab States, Social Enterprises, CSO Governance, and income-diversification of the not-for-profit sector. Other selected activities include: Guest Lecturer at the Central-Eastern University in Budapest, convener of a conference at the Bellagio Center (Rockefeller Foundation) on “Working with Men to End Gender Violence: a Global Interchange,” and co-founder, with seven other staff, of the UNDP’s Men’s Group on Gender Equality.

He has a M.A. in International Development from Cornell University and a B.A. in History from the University of Wisconsin - Madison.
